Cardholders of the roughly 280 participating libraries — heaviest in Cook, DuPage, Kane, Lake, McHenry and Will counties, plus some southeastern Wisconsin libraries. Despite the lingering association, this is NOT a Southern California program: the old Macy's-sponsored SoCal Museum Adventure Pass no longer exists, and SoCal libraries run Discover & Go instead. The card is the key: free for residents of the service area, same-day issue at most branches, and the pass catalog unlocks immediately.
Old-school checkout: pick up a physical pass at a participating library, first-come first-served (some libraries take email requests). 7-day loan period; the pass expires after the date printed on it. One Museum Adventure Pass per family per loan period; each library holds a limited number of passes per museum.

It is not a free-admission program across the board. Read the per-museum terms before you plan a $0 day around a pass that's actually 50% off.
Chicago's own free-day calendar covers 15 institutions we've verified, which changes where a pass earns its keep (Lincoln Park Zoo, National Museum of Mexican Art, Museum of Puerto Rican Arts & Culture are free every day — never spend a pass there).
