Discover & Go: California's Library Museum Passes

Updated 2026-09-14 · Free · No sign-up

Discover & Go turns a California (about 50 library systems, Bay Area + LA) library card into reservable museum admission: cardholders of about 50 participating California library systems reserve free or discounted museum passes online — a Bay Area invention that now also covers LA County and LAPL cardholders. Verified on the program's own pages, last checked 2026-09-14.

Who qualifies for Discover & Go

Cardholders of a participating California library system. Minimum age and card rules vary by library (Oakland and San Mateo County 14+, Santa Clara County and LA County 18+; eCards are typically excluded). It has not spread beyond California, despite the 'nationally recognized' framing. Getting the card is the easy half — free for residents, same-day at most branches with ID — and it's the only prerequisite.

Booking Discover & Go: the actual mechanics

Reserve online with library card + PIN, then print or download the pass shortly before the visit. Passes are released at 12am on the 1st of each month and bookable up to 3 months out (current month + 2). 2 active reservations per card is standard; some venues cap at 1 reservation per calendar year; no cancellation after the pass is printed or downloaded; non-transferable, ID required.

What's on the Discover & Go list

As listed on the program's own site, the pass covers 50+ museums and attractions in the Bay Area pool, plus a separate SoCal venue pool via LA-area libraries — among them: Asian Art Museum (SF) · Exploratorium · Academy Museum of Motion Pictures · Natural History Museum of Los Angeles · Autry Museum of the American West · Japanese American National Museum. A single reservation admits varies by venue — some family packs admit 4, some passes 2.

Is Discover & Go free or discounted?

A mix — the platform itself filters passes into 'free' vs 'discounted' categories, and the venue pool differs by home library. Budget accordingly — the program is honest about it on each institution's entry, and so are we.

Stack it with the Bay Area's free days

Cross-reference first — of the Bay Area's institutions, 7 already have verified free routes documented here. Between reserved passes and scheduled free days, paid admission becomes the exception, not the rule. Full list: free museum days in the Bay Area.
