San Diego runs one of the country's most unusual programs: Balboa Park Residents Free Days, where a different cluster of park museums is free each Tuesday of the month for City and County of San Diego residents (and active-duty military). The trick is matching the museum you want to its specific Tuesday.

Worked through the free schedule, that's as much as $109.80 back for two people and $219.60 for a family of four. The asterisk: Balboa Park Residents Free Days (multiple museums), Fleet Science Center, San Diego Natural History Museum (The Nat) gate their free routes by residency, so out-of-town totals run lower — each page's "who qualifies" line has the exact rule. Among the 37 covered cities, rosters run a median of 4 institutions — San Diego's 3 lands under the middle, which puts a premium on catching the days that exist. A short roster also shifts the weight onto the calendar-free routes below — Museums on Us weekends and Museums for All do proportionally more work in San Diego than in cities with a dozen free days to choose from.
Once a month, on the first full weekend, Museums on Us gives Bank of America cardholders free general admission at participating San Diego institutions. SNAP EBT households can also use Museums for All: up to four people, $5 or less, during normal hours.
