2 Detroit institutions with verified free admission. All of the schedules below are sourced from the institutions' own pages, each stamped with its source and check date.
| Institution | Free day | Who qualifies | Reservation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Detroit Historical Museum | No regular free day | General free-day eligibility unspecified | Required |
| Detroit Institute of Arts | Always free (residents) | Residents of Macomb, Oakland and Wayne counties | See page |
Walk-up adult admission at the 1 paid Detroit institution we track totals $15. Worked through the free schedule, that's as much as $30 back for two people and $60 for a family of four. The asterisk: Detroit Institute of Arts gates its free route by residency, so out-of-town totals run lower — each page's "who qualifies" line has the exact rule. Among the 37 covered cities, rosters run a median of 4 institutions — Detroit's 2 lands under the middle, which puts a premium on catching the days that exist. A short roster also shifts the weight onto the calendar-free routes below — Museums on Us weekends and Museums for All do proportionally more work in Detroit than in cities with a dozen free days to choose from.
Once a month, on the first full weekend, Museums on Us gives Bank of America cardholders free general admission at participating Detroit institutions. SNAP EBT households can also use Museums for All: up to four people, $5 or less, during normal hours.
Detroit has 1 institutions in the Museums for All program — show a SNAP EBT card plus photo ID and up to four people get in for free-to-$5, on any normal operating day: Museum of Contemporary Art Detroit (MOCAD). See the Museums for All guide for the rules and every participating institution nationwide.
Members of institutions elsewhere should try the reciprocity lookup first — NARM, ASTC and AZA reciprocity regularly gets traveling cardholders into Detroit institutions free.
